Abandoning games

It is really frustrating , when you finally get the white pieces in chess, and the opponent leaves the game. And only a warning is issued! If you click the "play" button. You are committed to play and should loose the same amount of points that you would resigning! Why is there even an option to abandon ?

This has happened 2 times already today! And I have played (started) less than 10 games!

Lichess has made me a better player with black pieces, that is for sure! :D But would be nice to get the same amount of games with white pieces as well!

Reality check: out of 268 games on lichess, you played 134 with white and 134 with black.
As to players aborting games without playing a move, the view on this site is that it is strongly discouraged (automatic warning), cannot be done persistently (inability to play games for progressively longer periods of time will result), but that just occasionally it can be necessary. Think, for example, of a miss-click in the lobby, or a technical problem which means they can't see the board.

It undeniably gets misused. But the offending players will suffer consequences if they persist.

Actually played games or total games (including abandoned games) ? In latter case there has been at least 20 games that has been abandoned when I got the white pieces, and 0 or maybe 1 when I got the black pieces.

In that case, yes I have played more with black.

Edit, Just in! 3 abandoned games as white today! People don't like to play against Nf3. This is getting ridiculous!
Abandoned games are not shown in the history. When I search for games with number of moves 1 or less, I only get three "from position" games against Stockfish Level 1; in two of them you resigned, in one you got stalemated.

Also, one important point that should be mentioned: rating is not meant as a system of rewards or punishments and should not be seen as one. Its purpose is to estimate player's performance relative to others so that players can be paired better. Using rating to punish bad behaviour would harm its usefulness.
An aborted game won't change your color preference for the next game, so you will still get 50% White and 50% Black, as mkubecek has counted.

So there is no real harm done to you.

If people really abort more games against 1 Nf3 ... I don't know. At the lower levels, possible. But you would need a much bigger sample to validate this. Like same player starts hundreds of games with 1 e4, and hundreds of games with 1 Nf3, ideally at the around the same time.

Maybe I should start looking at 1 Nf3 myself. :-)
